Arrowe Park Hospital in the Wirral, Merseyside, is to spend £28m transforming its emergency and urgent care facilities. The hospital is one of the North West’s busiest and its emergency unit, the only one in Wirral, serves 320,000 people. The two-storey building will include an extension to the emergency department and will feature a landscaped pedestrian area, relocating the current ambulance bays, which will improve traffic flow through the site. A new, dedicated ambulance entrance has been designed to give patients enhanced privacy.
The design of the exterior of the new facility has been inspired by the geological elements found naturally in the local area such as sandstone. It has also been especially designed to be aesthetically in keeping with the surrounding landscape.
Background:
Wirral University Teaching Hospital Trust (WUTH) runs Arrowe Park Hospital,has completely redeveloped the A&E unit and the Urgent Treatment Centre, which is currently based next door on the same site and is run by Wirral Community Health and Care Trust. The trust’s Chief Executive, Janelle Holmes said “It is fantastic that work will be underway as we celebrate the hospital’s 40th anniversary year” and that it was the “biggest investment at Arrowe Park Hospital since it was built almost 40 years ago and shows our commitment to enhancing the care we provide to those who are in most urgent need”.
“The work will completely transform Wirral’s only emergency department and also the provision of urgent care for local people,” she said. The new urgent care centre aims to provide faster diagnosis and treatment for patients whose conditions allow them to return home the same day. It said the redevelopment would provide “the very best clinical expertise”. Wirral Teaching Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, which runs the hospital, said it would combine the emergency and urgent treatment units, which are currently separated, into one building in the Summer of 2024. “The centre will have the very best clinical expertise and facilities to provide the safest and most clinically effective care for urgent and emergency patients,” a spokesman said.
GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF WORK
The works at Arrowe Park Hospital was carried out during June – November 2022
and consisted of –

New heating pipes installed to radiant panels and heater batteries installed in ventilation system connected to new AHU situated in the courtyard roof AHU Plant room. External chilled water chillers and a twin head pump has been installed to the flow pipework for circulation throughout the ward heating system, to provide complete comfort heating and cooling.
b) Domestic Water Services
New pipework serving ward 1 treatment rooms and all wards are connected to the hospital existing services.
c) Ventilation
Supply & extract ventilation connect to new AHU situated in courtyard roof AHU plant room.

the ventilation is fitted with a fire and smoke dampers. Each outlet terminates at a fully lined plenum
box connecting a 4-way diffuser. The ventilaton has been fixed with the requisite access doors to enable maintenance of fire and smoke dampers and duct cleaning.
d) Medical Gas
New connections are to be taken from existing site infrastructure. The new connections will be designed and installed to serve the new area and trust requirements. Within the Day case area, medical gas outlets will be located on vertical medical services trunking or pendants at each location to suit the room and chair bay layouts.
e) Plantroom Installation
The AHU plantroom is situated on the courtyard roof. The unit is one half AHU comprising
Fresh air intake has been enhanced with the installation of actuated damper, frost coils, pre filter, heat recovery unit, heating coil, cooling coils, inverter controlled supply fan, actuated isolation dampers, final filters, supply air actuated dampers, return air actuated damper, run and standby inverter controlled extract fans.
New pumps, air and dirt separator, expansion vessels and chilled water buffer vessels connect to the new heating and cooling circuits and pipework serving ward 1.
f) BMS Controls
The new mechanical plant which serves the associated areas are to be controlled by local control
panels. The Mechanical control and central plant control panels is linked into the existing site
BMS system with all necessary front-end controls provided and feed necessary information and
allow for the interface with site fire system.
g) Drainage
New soil and waste pipe systems will be installed to suit the updated space functions, the new
installation is connected onto existing drainage systems.
